In late April 2025, Jean-Pierre Farandou, then Chairman and CEO of SNCF, travelled to Jerusalem to visit Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center. He was accompanied by Philippe Mettoux, SNCF Group General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer, and Alain Leray, Executive Committee Advisor for Memory and History. They were welcomed by Dani Dayan, Chairman of Yad Vashem.
The visit was part of SNCF’s ongoing commitment to preserving the memory of the Holocaust and supporting historical research into its role during the Second World War. It also provided an opportunity to highlight Yad Vashem’s work to document and preserve the history of the persecution and extermination of Europe’s Jews and to pass this knowledge on to future generations.
The visit also reflects SNCF’s commitment to maintaining dialogue with institutions dedicated to Holocaust remembrance and historical research. Through these exchanges, the company helps make its archives and historical resources relating to its history during the Occupation available to researchers and the wider public, while supporting initiatives in research, education and Holocaust remembrance.
The longstanding relationship of trust between Yad Vashem and SNCF has enabled us to strengthen our work in two essential areas: transparency and research. Our archives from this period are open and accessible. This has always been our position and will remain so in the future: it is a moral obligation. We must confront history and acknowledge both its darkest chapters and its moments of courage and achievement.Jean-Pierre Farandou, Chairman of SNCF, april 2025
