With the support of SNCF, the Département de la Seine-Saint-Denis has worked with a number of towns, associations and institutions to help study, preserve and provide access to these sites.
Preserving and passing on the area’s history
The Seine-Saint-Denis département has many sites that bear witness to the history of the Second World War and its consequences for the population and the area. They recall, in particular, the internment, persecution and deportation of the Jews of France, as well as the commitment of Resistance members and the repression carried out during the Occupation.

Among these sites, the Cité de la Muette in Drancy holds a major place in the history of the deportation of the Jews of France. Turned into an internment camp and then, from 1941, the main transit camp, it was at the heart of the deportation system and the departure point for numerous convoys to Auschwitz-Birkenau and other destinations.
Mémoires en réseau helps raise awareness of this historical and memorial heritage of Seine-Saint-Denis. The site brings together resources devoted to sites of memory, events and the experiences of those who lived through this period. It thus helps to better understand the area’s history and to put into perspective the various traces that bear witness to it today.
Through historical and educational resources accessible to as many people as possible, Mémoires en réseau fosters knowledge of this history and its transmission to new generations. The initiative also helps to create links between the various sites of memory in the département and to highlight how they complement one another.
By supporting Mémoires en réseau, SNCF backs this work of understanding and passing on history. This partnership is part of its commitment to preserving and passing on the history of the Second World War, in particular the history of the Holocaust, the Resistance and the deportations.
