TV series: Les Combattants de l’ombre, 2011

A documentary series by Bernard George, 2011 – 6 episodes

Six hours of documentary telling, on a European scale, the story of the Resistance against Nazism during the Second World War.

Between 1939 and 1945, as the Third Reich extended its grip over much of the continent, women and men refused to submit. From Paris to Warsaw, from Athens to Copenhagen, they chose to resist and committed themselves, at the risk of their lives, to the clandestine struggle against the occupying forces and the Nazi regime.

Broadcast on ARTE in 2011, this six-episode series draws on the exceptional testimonies of the last living witnesses to this history, from fifteen different nationalities. These accounts are enriched with previously unseen archive footage and reconstructed scenes that convey the diversity of commitment and forms of resistance across Europe.

By giving a voice to those who lived through this history, Résister en Europe offers a fresh perspective on the Second World War, considered for the first time on a continental scale and from the point of view of those who chose to resist.
