SNCF’s five Regions in 1939-1945

When it was created, SNCF comprised General Management, the Central Departments and the Regional Directorates. In 1938, all the network’s lines were divided among five Regions: Est, Nord, Ouest, Sud-Est, Sud-Ouest, whose head office was in Paris. They embodied the company’s territorial presence.

Each Regional Directorate comprised three main departments: Equipment and Traction, Track and Buildings, and Operations.
The Operations Directors, at the head of each SNCF Region, were tasked by the Director General with running the railway service, directing staff, maintaining close contact with customers and their qualified representatives, taking or proposing any measures to develop traffic, improving the service and achieving economical operation. They ensured the execution of orders or instructions given by the Director General, or, by delegation, by the Directors of the Central Departments.
The Regions were in turn divided into arrondissements: MT (Equipment and Traction), EX (Operations) and VB (Track and Buildings) arrondissements. These covered two or three départements and were headed by an arrondissement manager.
The Track and Buildings Department is the origin of most of the Région du Nord archives held by the Centre national des Archives historiques.
