The Central Fixed Installations Department was responsible for infrastructure, tracks and surroundings, level crossings, engineering structures, buildings, electrical installations, telecommunications, signal boxes, as well as signalling and other safety installations. It studied and commissioned major creations and modifications based on the needs expressed by the Regions and other General Management bodies. It also set the policy and methods for maintaining installations. From 1972 onwards, it became the Direction de l’Equipement.
We currently have few 1939-1945 archives from this department to point out to readers: a few files, gathered by Raymond Amisse, a member of the Direction de l’Equipement (General Studies Department) and museum correspondent for the Musée du Chemin de fer de Mulhouse.
