The archives of the Central Traffic Department

Which became the Transport Directorate in 1972, then the Infrastructure Directorate in 1995, the Traffic department worked with the Commercial Directorates on developing the services to be offered to customers. It was responsible for organising the transport of passengers and freight and for overseeing its execution. In this capacity, it defined, both qualitatively and quantitatively, in liaison with the relevant General Management bodies, the resources needed: station, line and Transport-side installations and equipment of the joint Equipment and Transport establishments. In agreement with foreign railway networks, it set the general conditions for using these resources (notably safety regulations and the organisation of work), and ensured overall control of train movements. It also organised and coordinated the prevention of, and action against, theft and fraud.
